Day 1 Leave from a convenient airport near you and enjoy your flight to India.
Day 2 Arrive in Delhi airport late in the evening, you will be transferred to your hotel for two nights.
Day 3 Take a brief tour of Old Delhi with its narrow lanes and teeming bazaars. See the majestic Red Fort and visit the grand mosque before continuing to New Delhi with its wide avenues and other sites such as Humayun’s tomb.
Day 4 Travel by road (bus or van) to Agra, the site the Taj Mahal! Discover this beauty in white marble and later visit the impressive Agra Fort before checking into your hotel for the night.
Day 5 After breakfast, leave Agra and arrive in Fatehpur Sikri, once the capital of the Mughals and now a virtual ghost town; grand buildings made from red sandstone were abandoned in 1585, due to the lack of water! The complex of monuments and mosques, are all in a uniform architectural style. Later continue to Jaipur, Rajasthan’s capital city, where you will be spending two nights.
Day 6 Jaipur’s elegant buildings and palaces reflect its past wealth and grandeur. Visit the elaborate ‘Palace of Winds’, which is not a palace but merely a façade, behind which the ladies of the royal household could watch processions and street festivals without being seen themselves! Spend the afternoon walking through Jaipur’s bazaars – famous for their silver jewelry and handicrafts. Visit Amber Palace just outside the city – a hilltop fortress, accessed in appropriately royal style on elephant back!
Day 7 Drive through the countryside, passing villages and women wearing brightly colored garments before arriving at the holy town of Pushkar, one of the oldest existing cities of India. Pilgrims come from all over the country to bathe in the sacred water of the lake here. The Brahma temple, built during the 14th century, is the only one of its kind in India. Enjoy some free time today to soak in the atmosphere of the place.
Day 8 Leaving Pushkar today, drive past small towns and villages until you reach Udaipur. Known for its whitewashed houses with brightly painted outside walls, Udaipur is famous for the Lake Palace, a former Maharaja's residence in the midst of a lake. Later this afternoon, take a boat ride on the lake.
Day 9 Enjoy a full day tour of Udaipur today: See the impressive City Palace, rising from the lake shore, which was built in a flamboyant style and is considered the largest of its type in Rajasthan, a fusion of it offers a panoramic view of the city and several historic monuments in the surrounding area.
Day 10 After Udaipur, your next stop will be Ranakpur, the site of a famous Jain temple, made of exquisitely carved white marble; the temple has more than a thousand pillars, none of which are alike! From Ranakpur continue on to Jodhpur, which is also known as the ‘blue city’ since most houses in the old city are painted indigo blue. Spend one night in Jodphur.
Day 11 The majestic Mehrangarh Fort founded in 1458, towers over the city from a hilltop and is the largest fort in Rajasthan. During a guided tour visit the various chambers, enjoy the view from its many balconies and admire the delicate wood work and paintings. The rest of the day is free, and you might want to indulge in some handicraft shopping before boarding an overnight, airconditioned train back to Delhi. Enjoy a good night’s sleep – sheets and blankets are provided for your comfort.
Day 12 After arrival in Delhi in the morning you will be met at the train station. Enjoy the comfort of a hotel room until your transfer to the airport for your international departure.
Day 13 Arrive back in the US around noon.
